I'm now confused about the warranties. I have to read about this further.

Comparing just the shingles, is either better than the other? The roofers I had out install them both, so they are not bashing one to sell the other.

Thanks.

Its been years since I dealt with warranties. I know times have changed and they like to "sell" complete life time packages that include materials and workmanship.
But in the "good old days" warranties didn't mean much. The installer supplied a warranty on his work and the manufacturer supplied a warranty on product.
The product warranty was prorated, didn't include labor after a few years and usually was only a voucher for more product. So if your 30 year shingles failed after 20 years the warranty was essentially a "buy 2 bundles get 1 free" sale. They could actually make money on their own failed product.
The thing was shingles rarely failed when the warranty was in full force. They just didn't last as long as claimed and the manufacturers didn't care. As I said they could often make money or break even on a warranty claim.

My guess is that nothing much has changed since those same shingles that used to have 30 year warranties now seem to have lifetime warranties. :vs_worry:

OC Duration or Certainteed Landmark. The prices are the same for both, but the extended warranty for the Landmark is better. Any advice? Thanks.
both are comparable. Warranties are a crap shoot with shingles most of the time. Expect either option to last 20-25 at best, depending on what type of weather your roof sees and the pitch of it.

"50 Year" shingle warranties are really only 10 year warranties because unless you're getting an extended warranty that can be offered by certified companies, they're pro-rated after year 10.

In this case the Owens Corning System Protection warranty is 50 years of non pro-rated coverage. That covers materials, labor, tear off and disposal.

The Owens Corning Preferred Protection offers the same as the System Protection Warranty except it includes 10 years of Workmanship coverage backed by the manufacturer.

The Owens Corning Platinum Protection Warranty is the same as the System Protection but includes "lifetime" workmanship warranty backed by the manufacturer. However, in my area I know of only two companies who actually are able to offer this warranty due to their requirements.

The Certainteed 4-Star SureStart warranty is a 50 year non-prorated warranty covering materials, labor, tear off and disposal.

The Certainteed 5-Star SureStart warranty is 50 years of non-prorated coverage that covers the materials, labor, tear off and disposal costs as well as covers 25 years of workmanship backed by the manufacturer.
