Trouble with mortise entry lock

711 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  kjmass1
My front door has a mortise lock set. The main latch works fine, however the built in deadbolt (top lock) is having trouble. I've tightened the 2 bolts as tight as I can, however the key lock won't stay tight, it will rotate with the key when turning. Something I'm doing wrong?

Could be stripped interior.

Best bet it to just pull the thing out and give it a tune up of sorts.

Once you pull it out, how they work makes perfect sense.

If you don't want to fix that yourself---most lock shops will rebuild those old units and send it back as good as new.
Great thanks. I've taken apart smaller interior door ones but this one is a different beast. It must be stripped or somehow not catching the lock cylinder. I'll grab a couple more pics when o get home.

So I removed the trim piece and discovered that if the cylinder was turned 7 times the lock worked fine. With the trim piece on I could only get 6 turns so I forced it a pipe wrench and now it works! Thanks.
