I am trying to replace a wall sconce. The electrical box is rectangular in a vertical orientation and the holes for the mounting screws are at the top and bottom.

The new sconce has its own custom circular mounting bracket and it doesn't fit the holes in the box. The diagram in the instructions for the sconce show an electrical box with the mounting holes on the corners of the box. I have never seen a box like that.

Is there anything I can do other than return the sconce?

You should be able to try different alignments on the bracket to find a a way to match the holes to the slots.

I have tried that. The mounting bracket has two screws extending from it for mounting the sconce. Those screws must be in a horizontal alignment. there is no way to get both mounting screws into the bracket in a way that matches the holes in the box.
