We will be re painting our trim(baseboards, around doors and windows etc) inside our home. They will be white. I have started painting with the old touch up paint(just to get an idea of the job) and have decided that it is no good(maybe too old of paint). My question is, is that I need a paint that is awesome for trims. I love high gloss on trim but do not like how it shows all imperfections etc. I do not like flat because you cannot clean it. What sheen is best for this? Also, is there a particular brand, or brand within a brand that you have had good experience with? Do you use latex thinner with your paint? What is the best way to paint trim(spraying obviously, but not an option) that looks best? Any methods or advice would be greatly appreciated. Do you tape off the floor that meets the bottom of the baseboard? Also, what kind of paint would I use for metal door frames? I'm sure all of these questions have been answered a million times before. Thanks for any help:)

Personally, I like Sherwin-Williams ProClassic Waterborne in a Semi-gloss finish. Like many of the new paints these days, it can be tricky to use. It dries fast and there is always the chance of getting sags and runs because of the leveling characteristics of the paint. Lots of people complain about it because of these facts, but I love the end product which gives that smooth, glass-like finish.

#1, Everything needs to be cleaned first or it's not going to stick.
#2, Any flaws, paint runs need to be sanded or filled, no paints going to fix flaws.
Any latex paint works fine on metal frames.

More power to you, I can't use the stuff without adding Floetrol.

I found that Dutch Boy DuraClean semi-gloss is fantastic for trim. Easy to apply and lays flat with a near flawless finish. It's the only DB I will use.
