My unit is starting to make some noise, and it feels like the squirrel cage has excessive play. It's not obvious to me just how this assembly is most easily removed from the furnace. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Look at the blower as where it mounts and there will be slide rails. Follow the slides and you should find a could of screws to remove and after you remove the screws it will just slide out. You may have to work around the wires

I have seen the set screws work loose on motor shafts.. Check the flat spot on the motor shaft & see if the set screw is tight against the flat spot

And if its already worn a groove around the whole shaft, its too late.
