I changed the batteries in the thermostat and reattached to the the back plate. Now the touch screen does not responded (including the system button). Is there anyway to fix this?

Did you insert them with the proper polarity?

+ to + and - to -.

No joke. I had a customer put them in backwards and fried the thermostat.

Are they brand new batteries?

Did you by any chance feel a static shock when handling the stat.

Any decently designed battery operated electronic device should have a diode or something to stop it from getting cooked due to reversed polarity.
