I recently purchased a set of track lighting to replace a fluorescent fixture in my house. Unfortunately, when I took the fixture down, I discovered the screw holes in the junction box do not line up with the holes in the mounting plate-- this means the track will only run in the opposite direction I want it to run. Is there any adapter I can get to move the point of attachment to the junction box?

I attached a picture to help better describe the problem. I'm holding the mounting plate in the direction I want it to go.

Just use some drywall anchors and anchor the plate to the sheetrock. The weigh of the track isn't going to rest soley on the junction box. You are going to need to toggle bolt or drywall anchor the track in along the ceiling

I had already intended to use toggle bolts for the rest of the track. So not having a firm attachment to the junction box doesn't matter?

Just anchor it in around the box so it sits flush to the box. Having it mounted to the box itself doesn't matter cause the weigh on the light isn't going to sit on the box

Hard to tell from the picture, but usually those mounting plates are adjustable; something like remove a screw or two, rotate it 90 degrees, rescrew and it may work.

In this case, the mounting plate is not adjustable.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully I can just get the plate to sit on there, and have the pressure of the track against the ceiling hold it in place.

Drill tap.a couple screw sized holes in the plate

If you note by the picture, there isn't even any metal to drill through in that space; otherwise that would be a fairly simple solution. :wink:

There is a picture of a bracket for the light; you can buy this and similar ones at most places. They usually have multiple holes that may align with your box and your fixture's bracket. There are circular ones with a multitude of slots and holes that would potentially work.

it very well may require a solid connection to the box. There are adapors they look like a ring plate.
