A while back my sister moved out and dragged her heavy desk along the floor, which caused a hump in the carpet. After pulling the carpet up, the underpadding was bunched up and a big chunk was torn out of it. I bought some more and cut out a piece to fit in the very awkwardly shaped hole as best I could, at least well enough that we don't trip when walking through that area, but it keeps wanting to pop up and not stay in the hole even though it's under the carpet. It's not too tight a fit, actually too loose if anything. Does anyone have suggestions to get this one chunk to stay down without gluing it to the subfloor?

Tape it to the surrounding pad.Get some tape they use for house wrap.
Or staple it to the floor.I imagine the pad is already stapled.
I did think about tape, but was worried it would just rip out chunks of the padding if it decided it still didn't want to stay, but I suppose I will be renting a staple gun this weekend. Thanks so much!

This is just a hand stapler for $15 or $20.Not a pneumatic staper. It will serve your purpose.Or you can get what we call hammer tackers for $35 -$40.00. which would do better. They will work for your purpose and are nice to have on hand .I use a pneumatic stapler but it needs a compressor. They also sell electric staple guns which I would shy away from.I imagine some work well but not for what I do.
