I have to add top soil to countless areas of my lawn grass because of a
major issue with countless bumps and dips in the grass (lack of level lawn).

Should I pour grass seed down first then add the top soil to the areas

that need to be raised or should I not add grass seed because the existing

lawn underneath will survive and grow through the 1-2 inches of topsoil?

Before I did anything further, I'd try to find out why you have all those bumps and dips, and try to remedy that if you can.

If it's really that bumpy and dippy, you want want to consider taking out the lawn and rolling it flat and re-planting with seed or sod.

If you don't, you could end up with a lawn that looked like a friend of mine's did, like a giant green mangy mutt.

Also, where are you located? That could well make a difference.

It depends on the species. Some will survive with 18 inches of cover and some won't. Your county extension service will know if you'll give those folks some information.
Lawn grass that survives with 18" of cover?

Hmm. Bermuda grass maybe?

Zombie grass? :vs_cool:

Sorry, couldn't help it. They canceled karaoke . . . :devil3:

Yes sir.
In the 50's the street we lived on was being paved and we had an X-TRA lot that was low elevation where rain water stood. My Father conferred with the site engineer and stated if they desired they could dump that dirt they were loading onto that lot. A neighbor said " you're going to kill that grass ". Me being the kid that pushed that ole reel mower i was having to mow it again before summer's end.

WHOA

That is amazing. I thought I was jaded about B-grass.

It really should be called Z-Grass.

That calls for the sacred word: URK!
