I'm re-doing what was once a very makeshift shower stall. I've put up the cement board and I'm nearly ready to tile with 12 x 12 ceramic tiles. But I noticed there's more flex in the cement board than I expected. Two studs are spaced 20 inches apart. Where the spacing is 16 inches, it still seems pretty flexy. In hindsight, I could have put in blocking but I didn't think of it at the time. Time and expense is a major issue but of course I don't want my tiles falling off if someone leans on the wall. I never did this before so I don't know how much flex is too much and whether the thinset and tiles will compensate.
Any suggestions? Any insight would be appreciated.
