My garage needs a new roof. It has the original slate from 1920s and its in very bad shape. I am planning to reroof myself, but I am wondering if I should add overhangs to the front and rear of the garage roof... This would bring all 4 sides down to the same level and would also allow me to have one continuous gutter the entire way around, instead of what you see now.

My 2 concerns with doing this are:
1. Will it look weird on the front hiding most of the brick above the garage door?
2. Or coming down to the level of the window on the back of the garage?

Would building some type of recessed eaves for the soffit make it look better/or help with clearance above the garage door and rear window.

Sorry, I don't know why my computer rotated these images.

I would say "weird" is a subjective "eye of the beholder" kind of thing.
To me the existing roof line looks "weird" so I would probably change it. I realize somebody may argue I am messing with the original architecture and they would be right.
In my 30 years of estimating in Ann Arbor I'm not sure I remember anything like that. What does the house look like?

I think I'd photoshop a picture of the revised roof and study it.

With the bottom of the gutter essentially covering the brick down to the top of the garage door trim, it may look weird. I have the impression that it may have originally done so, and some previous owner may have cut the roof back to expose more area above the door.

I don't like continuous gutters going around corners. They suffer damming at the corners and cause problems getting proper slope towards the down pipes.

Personally, I don't like the dumping the outflow of the high gutter into the lower one. I'd rather see each gutter have its own down pipe.

We need to know what the pitch of the roof is and how far it is from the plate line to the top of the garage door and top of the soldier course of brick to even give you a reasonable answer. there is also the possibility of changing the pitch at the plate line to something like a 4/12 it may solve the problem but may not look good to you it just depends.
