Hello everyone, I getting ready to open up the space in my master bedroom closet, which is behind my master bath. In order to this I have to remove a one piece fiber glass shower that is leaking at the drain and has to be remove just to get at the drain, because my house is on a slab, so the dry wall has to be cut around the shower to remove the shower for the repair. I thougth it would be a great time to extend the master closet, besides that I have a one piece fiber glass jetted tube that never gets used. In the nine years that we have owned our home it has only been used 3 or 4 time, because it take to long to fill up and by the time it fills the water is COLD, so I wanted to remove that area and enclose, lay tile and enclose it with a tall glass door and block glass to make my rain fall shower with a bench in it. The project will give me a total of 99 sq ft for my closet space and 30 sq ft for my shower.
My question is my tube area has drywall, does the drywall have to be remove to backer board in placement or is their a product I can use to water proof the existing walls to save on cost or do they have to be replaced.

The drywall needs to be removed----Drywall is not allowed in wet areas in most parts of the U.S.

What are you going to use for a shower pan? You have options.

All will require opening the floor to add a 2" drain---

One requires removing the entire shower floor area and sculpting the new concrete to allow a barrier free entrance. another uses a curb at the doorway and a pan built up on the existing slab.

There is a system that uses a styrofoam pan.

Waterproofing the walls and pan are done in various ways----Waterproof surface membranes or paint on .

I will be removing the fiber glass tube, extending the closet wall 5'x8', by doing this it will allow enough room for a glass door enter their is an existing shelve that I will close in with glass block. My house was built on a slab I have a few things working towards my advantage, the plumbing is already there, the drain is already there, I just need to run a pipe in the attic for my rain shower fixture, the pan will be built and protected by a membrane and concrete for the pan, add the shelf to the door area. I will do most of the work myself to save money. This would make a good episode for DIY, I could even use some of there expertise with the project. This will be my first time, I will be doing all of the drawings and plans and submitting them for an owner/builders permit, to make the modifications to my house plans with the city.
