Hey, I'm tiling a tiny area that butts up to our fireplace (about 2' x 4' space). I don't use the fireplace often, but it does get used. Are there any special considerations I should make when tiling regarding the heat that it will eventually receive (I.e. special thinset or grout)? I'm using slate for tile, but don't think that's a problem. Anyone know of any safety concerns there? Thank you!

There is tile there now, which I plan to bust out, but I am not sure about the substrate. If I were to wager a guess, I would say that it is most likely plywood. The tile there now doesn't look special, but I am not a mason, and looks can be deceiving. Thanks for responding so quickly, too.
