So my wife and I are tiling around our fireplace and the wall on the left side that abuts at a "right angle" with another wall (brick wall that has been mudded and textured) is not plumb by about 3/8" at the top and less as it goes down the wall to the floor. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem so we dont have to cut the tile that will fit but will not be square. Ideally we would like the surround to abut the edge of the wall and be in line with the hearth tile which has already been set. I attach a pic which may help to understand the issue

I guess you mean the wall is 3/8" loose on the left? 3/8" over 8'?

You didn't mention the type, size, bond pattern of tile.

I would want to just start with small joints at the bottom and open up as I go up the wall.

Consider a 1/2 or 1/3 bond.
