Cement board is not waterproof. Cement board simply is not damaged by water. There are liquid (paint-on) waterproofing products available that can be used to topically waterproof the cement board.:)

Custom Building products offers Redgard at Home Depots.
Mapei HPG is available at Menard's and Lowe's (I thinkk Lowe's).
Laticrete International offers Hydroban, Product 9235, and a couple of others.:)
