I am doing my third home bathroom remodeling project involving floor and walls tiling. And like in my first two projects I really have problem with spreading thin-set mortar on the walls.
When I mix the mortar it becomes too sticky. So, when I spread it on the wall with trowel's straight side first, no matter what I do, a big part of mortar always remains on the trowel and I can never cover the entire dedicated tiling area.
As a result, I have to use a putty knife to finish evenly spreading the mortar, especially in the corners, before I can use notched side of the trowel.

It takes some time to lay just 4-6 tiles and it is a little messy because often I accidentally touch laid tiles with the mortar.

Is there any technique or tricks or suggestions?
