Hi all,

Here's my dilemma. I really want to install a double slide-in-wall door, like the attached image. However on the same wall , I must also also install light switches close to the door opening. Because the door slides "into" the wall, using normal 2x4 framing walls, the pocket inside the wall would not allow any standard electrical boxes (in order to install a light switch there) to coexist inside that pocket as this would block the door's sliding path.

I'm guessing I could always make a 2x6 framing wall, but I prefer not to add extra thickness to the wall if possible. Therefore I'm wondering, if I stick with a 2x4 framing wall, is there such a thing as super thin electrical boxes? or anything else that can get around my problem? Thanks!

We've discussed this at length in the not so recent past. In my 15 years in the trade, the only way I have seen this problem addressed is to either fur out the wall, or move the switch to an alternate location. The minimum measurement from the face of the stud to the door would need to be just over 1 1/2".

I need to do a double door, so there is no other side. I can put it outside of the door pockets, but that won't be within arms reach as I walk into this room.

I came across this, wondering if this could work? I could install the switch wiring somewhere else nearby and put the wireless switch by the doorway. Will this work?

Yes, that will work for what you're looking to do. My father in-law has something similar, and likes it. The switch isn't very estethically pleasing, but it works well for him.

Most pocket rood framing is 2x2's. You can use a standard depth (1-1/2") 1900 (4"x4") side strap box on the 2x2. You just have to be creative/careful running and securing the wires to and from the box.

You could use the device ring shown above by Speedy, and mount a switch there without a junction box. But you'll have to use a 24 volt relay mounted at the light and use class II wiring to make it legal.

No switch box needed.

I have these in washrooms, but I don't want this room to have light turned on everytime someone passes by.
