I was able to finally get the cartridge out of my bathroom faucet handle, and I got a replacement. The guy said that it was a hot water but now that I've installed it the handle is working backwards.

Problem two I took the cold water one out but it didn't look so bad so I decided not to replace it. Now however the cold water won't shut off. It doesn't seem to matter what way I turn the handle the water just keeps coming.

Okay, fixed the problem with the cold water faucet. There was an gasket that we placed incorrectly.

However now they are both backwards. The handles come forward to turn it off and go back to turn it on.

There is no hot and cold cartridge, they are both the same. If the handle is turning the wrong direction pull the cartridge and turn it 180 degrees and reinstall.

FYI my old American Standard definitely has 'HOT' and 'COLD' valves. They are actually different. The Hot has larger round apertures, the cold has smaller triangularish ones. I have NO idea why.

Good luck with your sink troubleshooting. I try and take lots of pictures when I'm taking something apart so that I can put it back together correctly.

Sounds to me like you have the hot stem on the cold side and the cold stem on the hot side. If you have lever handles the you will need a left handed valve on the cold side and a right handed valve on the hot side.

This is the best picture that I could find. As you can see the cartridge itself is threaded. So pulling it a turning it 180 degrees doesn't actually accomplish anything. I also tried switching them with no luck.

Fan, Are you saying that the cold water side lever use to turn off and on in the correct position, you took it out, didn't replace anything, reinstalled it using only the old parts and now the lever works in the opposite direction???

I'm not sure how that could happen. Try swapping them.

That's exactly what I'm saying and I did try swapping them.

Is the entire cartridge one piece that is screwed in place or is there an independently rotating threaded ring on the outside of the cartridge that is screwed down while the cartridge itself stays still?

Can the handles be removed from the shafts and repositioned to work as they did long ago?
