Hello,

we currently have a storm and the heat pump is completely frozen inside out. The whole winter it has been building up snow and ice. Yesterday the thermostat screen went blank, I checked the sum pump as some people told me if the water is clogged it will shut down the unit.

Finally, decided to go check the heat pump outside and there was a thick layer of frozen ice. Check the picture its nothing you've seen before (maybe). We are currently freezing so we bought a few little heaters, but we need the unit back on.

What can we do to remove the build-up of the ice inside the heat pump?

Currently, I removed all the ice from the outside. The fan which is on top also had a thick layer of ice.

I suspect that water is leaking from the roof on to the heatpump. Really need to get that dealt with.

You can run the unit with the ice removed from the top and fan and see if it goes into defrost mode, usually this is after 90 minutes.

If it won't defrost, turn the thermostat to emergency heat mode until this is resolved.

Now, if you notice the heatpump is accumulating ice on the coil alone and not defrosting, you'll have to call someone out or troubleshoot yourself if you have a meter and am comfortable with electrical.

I'm betting your system has electric backup; turn the thermostat to emergency heat mode until this is resolved.

It seems like there was water leaking from the roof, but not a lot to get that thick layer. I am alright with electricity troubleshooting, but not an expert. I am just a simple guy

Check the low voltage fuse in the air handler or furnace. (do you have gas or oil backup or is it an air handler inside?)

I cannot find where the fuse is... I have air handler I suppose, I am not too sure. How can I provide that information? It is not gas, it's electric.

Find the indoor section where the refrigerant lines lead to and take off the cover.

you may be in over your head and it could be better to call someone out. your choice.

Switch to emergency heat for now.
As said you’ll have to start by checking the low voltage fuse and transformer. These will be in the air handler.
