I've got two separate feeds I need to run from one panel to another, but the panels are 3 studs away from each other. The run will not be exposed, it will be behind sheetrock. Running on the outside is not an option for aesthetic and functional reasons of the room. These are not small feeds (each 4-4-4-8 THHN). One feed is coming in, and the other is heading out to yet another panel elsewhere, but both are needed across these same 3 studs in the wall.

Questions are:
  1. Can I run this through studs at all? If so, I imagine I will need to use multiple smaller holes with straps (keep each small enough for structural integrity of stud).
  2. Is conduit needed? (seems like yes BUT is kinda dumb because it means the holes in the studs have to be large enough for both wire and conduit)
  3. If running through studs is not an option, any suggestions on alternative?

The THHN is an existing 4-conductor line running out to a detached garage. However, good point for the short run, I should use SER (or NM?). This is for the short run between the panels, needs to feed it 90A.

The THHN is #4 copper to supply 60A 100ft away (currently in burried PVC conduit). I suspected it will need to be in conduit, and I might be ok in the studs as long as 1" pipe is ok (max hole size in a load bearing 2x4 is 1-3/8").
