Yes, just make sure that it is compatible with the type of system you have. All a Heat pump is, is a glorified air conditioner, but with a reversing valve to change the direction of the freon depending on if wanting to heat or cool.
Model numbers would help here. So you have a AC unit and a thermostat that runs a heatpump? Depending on the thermostat it may have a setup setting to control just a standard AC unit. The AC units are very simple. Two wires to turn on the relay to start the compressor and fan. Heat pumps have power (red), ground(blue or green), call for backup heat (white), Compressor turn on (yellow wire) and reversing valve (orange).
