I've had an issue in my house since I bought it in 2007, it was also built in 07. Every thermostat that I've bought has always read that the interior temperature was about 5 degrees F hotter than it actually is until night time. Then after night falls then it reads correctly and shuts down when it reaches the temp it is set to.

I just don't get it, the thermostat is at the interior of the house away from windows about 3 feet above the return grate.


Is there something I'm missing here?

No, the other side of the wall/sheetrock is the interior furnace, A/C unit.

Ok, so how warm does the furnace room get? Where does the combustion air for the furnace come from.

I get where you're going...It can get pretty warm on the other side as it's not insulated/sealed from the attic space to the interior a/c room. The wall behind the thermostat has no insulation as well, it's just sheetrock then hot air. I'm guessing some insulation would be a good idea on the other side of the wall of the thermostat...

Yep, and also caulk the hole the thermostat wires go through.

Well, thank you for the enlightenment lol. It is much appreciated, maybe it will save me some money in these South Mississippi months to come. Thinking about getting more insulation blown as well in the attic, it has roughly 4 inches of insulation. I figure more is better.

Your welcome.

And more is better. But, first caulk all holes in the attic plates where any wires come through. Sealing air leaks can often reduce energy cost more then insulation does. Depending on how leaky the house is.

I would pull the wire to a location in the room, where it is not going to affect the thermostat with radiant heat & cold from a unconditioned space. Plus, insulating the mechanics space, will actually help keep the rest of the house cool.
