Sounds to me like you have a need to replace the 24V transformer that provides the signal voltage to the control board via the switch built into the t-stat. This transformer is usually mounted in the fan compartment of the unit.

Is the cutoff switch on? Some units have a wall switch with a red cover remote from the gas furnace or oil burner.

"Canister" sounds like the capacitor for the blower.

A transformer looks like a cube or block, with visible laminations....and is usually tagged 120V/24V if you have a gas furnace and 240V/24V for an electric air handler, and more often than not it's rated for 40VA but you should check your labeling. Some transformers also have a re-settable fuse, kinda rare but it may have a switch on it that can be reset.

If you are not sure what the transformer is, go to the local hardware and ask for a 24V transformer, they will show you what it is, then you can go back home and find what you are looking for. Once found make sure you turn power off to the unit, the secondary side is 24V but the primary is either 120 or 240 depending on your unit.

hey thanks everyone, I got hold of a local tech and he advised me to check the fuse in the air handler (circuit board). this looks like a car fuse. I pulled it and although it wasn't blown I re-inserted it and turned the breaker back on and the themostat came back on. I'm guessing that this fuse may reset the system. I was willing to pay this guy to come out and solve this for me but he willingly offered the info I needed. There goes to show that it's not always about making a dollar. Thanks again for everyone who offered advice. I'm gonna tackle installing a dish washer this week. I may be back, LOL.
