I would like to have an outdoor fence installed and would like to find out the best wood for this would be. I thought Cedar would be the best but not sure.

How expensive is cedar compared to Cypress, which my contractor seems to like.

In my area Cedar and Cypress are roughly the same cost. Are you set on not using pressure treated, as it is definitely the most cost efficient.

I do not have a problem using Cedar or Cypress on the custom fences I build, but for your average run of the mill fence I use pressure treated.

I am in Jacksonville, Florida so it should be about the same price here. Would you recommend cedar over cypress?

I don't mind having to do a little up keep on either one, I just want the best wood for the job.

About how much do you or would you charge for a job like this:

144' of 8'x6' cedar shadow box fence (picture framed)
62' of 8'x3' cedar shadow box fence
2 cedar gates
using 6"x6" posts


Another question:

If I use cedar for the fence, should I use cedar for the 6"x6" posts that are holding the fence up or do you use pressure treated lumber?
