After visiting the old 1896 school site, which was constructed of tile block and exterior of stucco, i found interesting information of the history of Terracotta as a building material. If one has never been in one of those buildings in hot and or cold weather it's difficult to understand the full value. All of those that had their wood / shake roofs maintained still stand pretty much as they were when built.

I have worked on many buildings that were constructed with the clay tile, some had brick exterior others had Stucco exterior. All the interior sides were Plastered. Have worked on schools that all the interior walls had Plaster on both sides also the chalk boards in these schools were made of Plaster direct to the Clay tile.
Down here in the South it was know as speed tile due to the fact that the tiles could be placed on day 1 & on day 2 you could plaster the interior & exterior @ the same time. They also manufactured Terra - Cotta cornice that was used on many exteriors also used as window trim.
