Why do tapcons have an enbedment range? What is the negative effect of using a tapcon which is too long and exceeds the recommended 1-3/4" maximum embedment?

There is none, the main concern is not deep enough.

Ayuh,.... Ya wear out more drill bits drillin' holes deeper than necessary,....
At some point, the friction from drivin' the tap-con reaches the point where the head snaps off,....
More excessive depth does Nothin' for Strength,....
That's 3 reasons off the top of my head,.....:vs_cool:

Thanks. Although its a bit of a waste, I want to avoid a trip to the store before finishing a project. I have some tapcons about an inch longer than needed.

If the hole isn't right, running long tapcons in usually means that they snap off while being driven in.
Make sure you blow the hole out and they are clean all the way down.

When drilling tapcons, make sure the hole is at least 1/4" deeper than the fastener. Also blow or vac out the dust from the hole. Depends what you are drilling into. They go into modern block units easier than old concrete. Sometimes it's easier to make the extra trip and save some cussing. Once the cussing starts, you're going to make the trip anyway.

joe is right about the tapcons,, ive never really had much luck with them, ive found that they dont really provide much holding power other than lateral resistance for bottom plates on concrete.. based on the cost of them alone a roll of tie wire and some hand spikes hold just as well if not better in some situations if its a structural connection i switch to concrete wedge anchors
