I am preparing to install a patio cover and would like to attach it to my house with a wood cleat. Can anyone tell me if that is done with a flashing between the siding and the patio cover? What type of wood would be best to use. I hope to lag bolt the cleat into the wall studs and support the overhand with it. As a new home owner with limited construction experience I would appreciate any advice I can get.

Flashing will go between the ledger ( 2 X 10) and the house. And flashing is slipped under the siding above the overhang and over the edge of the roof to shed water onto the roof, not into the roof.

It might be a good idea to give an overview of your proposed construction. Size of structure, joist size planned, covering material, etc. Also ,where your live. Snowloads or not.

I live in California- no snow load to consider. Cover would be approx. 10 feet wide and extend 12 ft from the house. I plan to support the outside edge with 3 4x4 posts and attach a 2x8 header to the house. I would like to use redwood where possible and will connect the support posts to metal in-ground anchors to help prevent rot. Once constructed, I would like to cover the structure with lattice panels or shade cloth.

What connects the 2x8 ledger to the 4x4 posts? Twelve feet is a long way. Smaller wood joists like 2x4's or 2x6's will sag over time. The lattice will need something to hold them up.

The distance from the house to the posts is 10 ft. I expect to sandwich the 4x4 posts between 2x6 lumber and then run 2x6 lumber from the house out to the connecting 2x6's. Obviously, I am a novice at this (never built anything like this before). Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am on a fixed income and trying hard to do as much of the construction as I can on my own. A neighbor has offered to help with securing the 2x8 to the house with lags. Otherwise, this will be a "one woman show"
