Three wire to the ceiling, probably red switching the lamp and black switching the fan...are you sure it's hooked up the same?braves22 said:

Had two single pole switches connected one to a light and the other to a fan which are tied into the ceiling.
Anyways I am changing out the switches for a rocker and 3 speed fan control. The problem is I have full control of the fan but the light for the rocker switch will not go off. I thought there could be an issue bc the left switch which controlled the light was hooked up with a red up top and black at the bottom...when I correspond it to the new switch there is always power no matter whether the rocker is up or down...can someone help me...thx
When I took out the two single on off simple switches they had red/black on the switch to the light and black with white paint and black on the right switch to the fan...MCB said:Three wire to the ceiling, probably red switching the lamp and black switching the fan...are you sure it's hooked up the same?
Sounds like the pigtailed blacks should go to each new switch each and the red one controls whichever it sends power to : fan? And black to lampbraves22 said:When I took out the two single on off simple switches they had red/black on the switch to the light and black with white paint and black on the right switch to the fan...
All I did was hook up the 3 speed fan control like it said while using the 2 wires that were connected to the previous switch...
I will rewire it however it should be done...
Here's what I have, I have 2 blacks coming from a pigtail, 1 to the left and 1 to the right and a red coming in and a black coming in.
The pigtailed blacks should be hot and the other two are the switched onesbraves22 said:And at my ceiling it's red to the fan and black to the light
Ok so if that's the case, then i imagine the pigtail black goes on top and the black painted white goes on bottom for the rocker switch? And then pigtail black to black and red to red for the fan side switchMCB said:The pigtailed blacks should be hot and the other two are the switched ones
a pic of the switches you are using might be helpful...
How about a pic of the wiring with the switches you're having trouble with:laughing:a pic of the switches you are using might be helpful...
