I'm installing a bathroom in my basement, I'm done with the PVC Drainage plumbing under the concrete and bathroom framing. I'm about to start installing the copper water lines (shower/vanity/toilet). Question; I'm going to sweat/solder the threaded end into the shower valve.. has anyone else ever done this? or recommend this? I've been told it's common and has a less chance of leaking then tape and pipe dope.

never done it.. Always used pipe dope.. Not a fan of tape

I've done it before....on a European faucet a friend ordered on ebay. The threads while 1/2", werent tapered so the adapters just bottomed out without becoming tight. Its not something I would recommend unless in unusual circumstances. That being said however....some tub/shower valves are designed to accept 1/2" copper tubing (sweat) OR 1/2" female adapters. If you do decide to sweat anything into the valve body itself, be sure to remove any parts which might be damaged from the heat.

I never had a teflon taped/compounded thread leak if tightened properly. But if you want to solder it, you need to remove all the guts of the shower body. Including all the ,"O" rings that are in there at the bottom.

I appreciate everyone’s reply, it helps me tremendously, being this is my first time installing a shower/tub valve.... all I can think of is a leaky messy mistake. Now I can install it properly and move on… thanks once again!
