Quick question:

I need to sweat elbows to bring 1/2" copper pipes into my shower valve. I can sweat the pipes to the valve or use a threaded connection. If I do a threaded connection with plumbers tape, will the heat of sweating the elbows screw up the seal of the plumbers tape? The closer elbow is about 5" from the shower valve.

Thanks!

I suggest you check with the tape manufacturer about off gassing of the tape when used in close proximity of a torch.

Case in point. A welder co-worker was heating a 2" pipe fitting and suddenly became ill. It was thought to be the gas from Teflon tape used in a screw fitting close by. There was no proof of this. Just thought I'd mention it.

Should be no problem. I like the idea of threaded connections for most valves. Makes it a little easier to change, (maybe) and more importantly keeps the heat away from the valve. I would use tape and also coat it with teflon plumbers paste.

I prefer to solder pipes to shower valves---

Soldering near a threaded connection can cause the threaded fitting to leak--
When that happens--you are in trouble--there is no way to tighten up that fitting.

One vote for soldering---

no problem with the 4 or 5 inch distance, if your afraid of too much heat getting to the threads, just wrap a wet towel around the pipe closest to the threads to absorb the heat..
