A few years ago, I bought Sycom surge protector (syc-120/240 tc) for my home's 200 Amp main panel. As per its instructions, I connected its white wire with the other white wires, connected #1 black wire into a 30A breaker and connected its #2 black wire to a different 30A breaker. Each breaker is on a different panel phase. Thus, covering both phases of my home's 200A electrical panel. The Sycom unit has been working great. For product picture, surf: http://74.53.140.226/~sycomsur/products/SYC_120_240TC-4-20.html

For my Travel Trailer (that uses max 30A 110V power), I was hoping to install the same Sycom Surge protection unit. Plan to install its white wire with the other white wires and connect #1 black wire to a 30A breaker. Thus, covering its single phase service. Here's my question... For its #2 black wire, do I connect it to a 30A breaker (as well) or simply leave this #2 black wire disconnected? Leave disconnected because the main panel in my TT is a single phase service?

thanks.

As you know, your 30amp RV circuit is 120 volt only. Unless there is something about the unit that it has to be used for 240v service across both legs as in a house panel, I would think that leaving the one leg disconnected would be ok.

I would suggest to check with the manufacturer of the unit just to be sure.

Thanks. I will only connect 1 x Black wire. Had a "gut feel" that connecting both black wires to the same phase created no additional benefit. Will also check with Sycom company as well. thanks.

Update:

As per Sycom prime (see below), I should use a different Surge Product on my Travel Trailer's 30A - 110/120V system instead. For this 110/120V distribution panel (which is different then a home's 200A / 220V main panel box), I should be using SYC-120HW. re: http://www.sourceresearch.com/Sycom/Sycom-pdf.cfm?PdfPage=syc_120hw.pdf

Note: My local RV Deailer wanted "on sale" $350 + taxes for their Travel Trailer / RV Trailer Surge protection unit. As they say, it does "save" to shop around. LOL!!!!!

Some places supply 132v so the clamping voltage at 130vrms seems low to me, and they don't say how many joules.
If you're in the FL or the Ozarks you may need extra protection.

Question how to connect RV surge protector!

I second the (e)motion of poster #2 Vsheetz. Contact the manufacturer of the product. Sometimes, connecting an appliance (anything, for that matter) to a different voltage than it is designed for, can create a hazardous condition. Especially in an RV. Due to the Aluminum wiring that it contains. Sometimes, a product is designed to run on 240v. as are most services of RVs. (No matter what):no:Don't Drink and Drive:drink:!!!

New question....

For my Trailer's Main Panel, is the below Sycom or Intermatic product better? re:

Intermatic AG2401C-IND (110/120V device)
http://www.intermatic.com/~/media/files/intermatic/products/other/surge%20suppression/secondary%20surge%20arresters/ag2401c-ind%20-%20data%20sheet.ashx

Sycom SYC-120HW (110/120V device)
http://www.logicsolution.com/SYC-120HW.pdf

Note: Was told quality in each product is determined by their VOM, Clamping, max Amp and Joules ratings. Unfortuneatly, I don't understand these specific values (and their good compared to better numbers).

For a Travel Trailer's main panel for short term 15A - 110/120V and future upgrade to 30A - 110/120V, which of these products would you pick?

Many thanks.

The first one can handle 40 kA and uses the standard lightning current waveform, the second handles 19.5 kA and it clamps at a pretty low voltage.

Based on current alone, if the second one costs more than half the first, get the first one.
