I have two pumps in my basement. It's been raining light for the last few days and one pump comes on every 30-45 seconds. It runs for less than 5 seconds then shuts off with a bang.

I figure the bang is the check valve shutting. I can feel it slam shut. If the cost isn't much I'll probably just replace it. Would moving it higher on the pipe also help? Its about 2 feet off the floor with another 5 feet up to the joist.

Coming on too often could be because the float switch is out of adjustment. I'll probably need to find a manual on the web to see how this is done.

Does this sound reasonable or are there other troubleshooting things I should be looking at first?

Soil is porous in my area so I don't deal much with sump pumps. Sewer ejectors are common though. They have swing checks(they do bang) to deal with solids. Since you don't have solids, consider a spring check valve. They are quieter. And I would leave it at the existing height. Raising it will only allow more water to come back to the basin after a cycle. And it does sound like your floats need adjustment

Got a picture of your set up?
If that much waters coming in you need to be doing some work outside to prevent it from coming in, in the first place.
Working gutters with down spout leading way away from the foundation.
Grade running away from the foundation.
No mulch or flower beds againt the foundation.
Water proof the outside of the foundation.
May need a french drain.

Sure sounds like your pit may not be deep enough if it's coming on that often, and the outflow line may need to be supported better.
