My neighbour's sump pump drains in between both our lawns and because of the slight grade all the water comes out on to my sidewalk and is quite the problem in the late fall and early spring when my whole sidewalk turns into a skating rink and is quite hard to keep clear. I was told to dig a hole at the end of the drain pipe and bury a large barrel (rain barrel size), with holes in it, filled with gravel then aim the pipe down into it and cover everything back up. I'm thinking that the size of the barrel might be too big and would create an enormous amount of labour for me to do personally. (I don't have a man around to help with the work:no::wink. Would this be a good solution, or who would I call to have this type of work done? I would like to have this done before the summer is over.

Post a picture please---There is no need to bury a barrel for your neighbors drain---

Is this the result of recent work that the neighbor did? It is conceivable that they have an unpermitted installation. Either way, I agree 100% with Mike; you should not have to install a barrel to accomodate the neighbors sump pump.

How easily can you pour more soil at the property line (all on your side) so the wat4er does not even come over into your yard? You could turn that into a strip flower garden.

No it is not due to recent excavation. The houses here are about 25 years old. My neighbour is also a single woman and her yard is not cared for at all so I don't think she would fix it if I asked her. Plus my sump pump also does the same thing on the other side of my property and goes down the sidewalk of my other nieghbour but not as bad. I'm willing to do this myself. I have a friend to come and help me.
I can't put any dirt over it. It is located right in the middle of our 2 properties about 1 1/2 feet from the sidewalk. I do not want a garden there.
All the houses on this street have these drains but mine is the only one that seems to come to the surface. The others must be buried further down.
I just want to know if I need such a big barrel to bury or if a smaller one like a 10 gallon pail would be enough.
Who would I call to get this done professionally? Someone in the septic business? I'm not sure who to call.

Any good landscaper could do that work----digging a deep trench and filling it with coarse rock is one method--best would be to trench a drain so the water simply flows away----
