Can anyone suggest on how to fix this or advise if this will be that noticeable when painted. The crown molding on top of this column does not sit flush with the edge of the tray ceiling. In fact it sits about an inch proud on the one side and a quarter inch on the other. I suggested to the finish carpenter that we go with a smaller crown but he said that due to the column not being framed square to the edge of the tray ceiling you would notice it even more with smaller crown. I'd rather not pull all this off and start over as the columns have the 2x4's ramset into them. Thanks for any help guys

My opinion would be to use a smaller crown. Same profile.

Alternately, can you build up the beam with a couple layers of drywall so it looks like a "Plinth" block on top?
Not sure if that is the correct term for it, but if it was on the bottom of a casing it would be called a plinth block.

looks like a high end job, with a less than high end column. the column box/trim should be torn off, and a new box be made square to the room, or re-use the original if possible. the carpenters did not check for square when they built the column box.

how many are like this?

I tackled it today, ripping it all off and redoing in. My wife thought I was crazy, but after getting it all done I can say I'm supper happy and proud of the job I did. I need to still do the crown molding, I attempted doing it and could not get the corners to meet tightly. I'm going to read up on it and try tomorrow. I will post pics of the completed project. I can't thank everyone enough for the help and advice.

So, you did what I would have suggested, or at least somewhat.

Rip the "wrap" off, reinstall it shimming the wrap so it is square to the ceiling (if the rest cannot be removed).

For the crown, if you're using the same crown for the rest of the project, I would use the same at the top of the column and allow it to go past the wall edge. See it like that all the time.

Thanks guys I will get pic's up when I get this finished, I'm having trouble getting the crown to fit tightly at the miter edges. Once I figure out this angle thing I will post pic's of the final product. Thanks for reading and the help
