about 15 years ago I was looking for a cheap short term solution. Out of curisoity I bought these to try on one run. By the end of the summer I did the whole house and garage. They are still working good. Twice in 15 years I have cleaned out the little entry grooves. My pitch is only a 4/12 and I would not vouch for them on a 12/12 and they have been a bit overwhelmed in an extreme downpour. The kind of downpour that never seems to last more than 4 or 5 minutes. Given the price and the rather flimsy look and feel I absolutly cannot complain about 15 years of service.

Just don't invest in something like Gutter Helmet. Very, very expensive, supposed to be guaranteed for as long as you own your home.......I've cleaned out several gutters with gutter helmets attached. The main problem is that birds like sparrows build their nest in gutters covered with gutter helmet. Why birds would want to build a next in a wet environment like a gutter is beyond me, but, that's what they do.

Depending on the kind of trees, alu-rex seems to work quite well. I much prefer the new construction style one to the one with the neoprene gasket, though it requires new gutters.
It does nothing if you have problems with pine needles. I haven't seen a guard that does. I believe its a Canadian product, but there is likely the same style available stateside.

Like some have said, it depends on what kind of trees you have. I had Italian Cypress for a while, they have very short needles that would mess up most any system.

There are also trees that have catkins, those little beardlike things, that clump up when wet into something like wet insulation.

I put these 3' drop in aluminum gutter guards on my 300+ ft. of gutter 12 years ago and they have worked well and are still in good condition. I have a large maple tree very close by and they do keep my gutters from clogging from the leaves and seeds. There is also a locust tree nearby that when it drops its leaves in the fall the leaf stems that are similar to pine needles go right thru the gutter guard.
