Need some electrical work in my condo such as installing new light fixtures and chandeliers. Somebody referred me to Home Advisors, but all I see are bad reviews about this company. I suppose I could try Craigslist, but that is always questionable. I believe Angie's List you need to pay some type of fee, so that is probably not a good idea for me. Suggestions appreciated!

As this is a DIY forum, hanging a light fixture might be one of the more simpler tasks getting started in electrical. Familiarize yourself with some Ytoob videos, and then evaluate if it's something you can do. It takes more balls to admit to need help than to tackle something risky.

Finding a "big yellow page" electrician I can't imagine is going to do such a small job though. Dave's advice is a good start. Maybe a handyman. All of those internet sites that aggregrate contractors is really just advertising.

It doesn't sound like the OP is trying to DIY it. Maybe check with the condo board. They may have a standing 'trade-of-record' list that you can either choose from or must use.

I have had the most success finding trades people with Yelp. Its reviews are voluntary and by real customers. Problem with Home Advisor is that the contractors need to pay to be listed and many do not pay and so are absent entirely.

Whenever possible I have a smallish project done first and then determine if the contractor was a good choice or not. By small I mean in the $300 to $500 range.

I have had good results with plumbers and concrete and landscape people I have found on Craigslist but one does have to know enough to be able to interview them and verify their knowledge and skills and experience. The advantage with the people who post on Craigslist is that I have never had to pay a trip or truck charge which with some business in the yellow pages would cost me $150 or more just to have someone show up.
