My local materials yard carries 3/4 Recycled Gravel, 3/8 PRocessed Gravel and 3/4 Dense Graded gravel.

I am planning on pouring about 100 sq ft of sidewalk andwas wondering which one of thesemight be. the best choice. Or basically which one might be synominous with modified type 2 gravel.

Ask your local material yard. It is their product.



Kind of depends on the thickness of the concrete. I use sand, clean gravel and crush on top of that, in that order.

I’m in Rhode Island. So we have freeze thaw. Under the old sidewalk there is very sandy dirt. Was thinking I Will be adding 4 in sub base of a modified gravel t2. Sidewalk slabs will Be 4 in thick. Thanks Again think hink they area are understaffed and person I talked to a to wasnt sure.

12.50 per ton is a lot nicer than 29$ per.

but only need around two tons, so its not a bank breaker either way.

I think its original based on original layout drawings of the neighborhood and it stops at my neighbors house which was built later...so about 100 years. It had date stamp but it was unreadable. it was completely broken apart heaving everywhere, I could have potted plants in the cracks
. One half sidewalk in front of the house was replaced at some point later.

FWIW, the RI DOT appears to use a 4" PCC sidewalk over an 8" gravel base.

Probably because you guys get more cold weather up there—down here it's typically only a 4" base.

Thanks for the heads up! Our town did all new sidewalks down major roads in the Fall and I went over and watch them and thought for sure they did a 4" base, but I will check with the town. Of course, I asked about redoing my own sidewalk and the good thing is I don't need to pull permit nor get anything inspected. Or i guess that could be bad thing 8" would be fine as well, just a little more digging and another 30 bucks in gravel.

Note that a town's spec may not match a state DOT's. So it's possible the town only requires 4"—saves them some money if they're doing a lot of sidewalks.
