Hi guys,

Unfortunately I had a bad contractor who patched small cracks in my patio roof ceiling (but made it a million time worse looking). Furthermore, my painter did not give me guidance not to use satin paint (which makes the imperfections looks worse).

Anyways, in person the ceiling looks as bad as in in the picture. My painter said he used 2 coats of primer and 2 top coats of satin sherwin williams paint. You can see the sheen differences and the stucco repairs really stand out.

I tried painting a small section with the stucco repairs and around it with zinser 123 primer, but it didn't help. If I went with the color of the house on the ceiling and did 2-3 coats of flat paint do you think this would help make it look more uniform? Or will it always show the streaking? Any other recommendations? I know I could hire a stucco guy to come out and restucco the whole ceiling and repaint, but that's more than I want to spend considering I'm considering selling soon. Thanks in advance for the help

Assuming the patches were allowed to dry before priming and assuming that the 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of finish were applied with sufficient dry times between coats, there shouldn't be an issue of color difference.

Was, by chance, this job completed all in one day?

2 coats primer & 2 coats finish in one day is kinda pushing it, depending on the conditions. But from a paint standpoint, the sheen is the problem. The patching could have been better, but if redoing the patching is not an option, the flat paint is your best solution.

Thanks guys, I'm going to give rolling on 2 flat coats of the white paint a try. I was just disheartened when I tested rolling on a sample area of new stucco and the old stucco with zinsser 123 primer and it didnt appear to change any of the sheen or look.

That's because 123 has some sheen to it, it is not flat.

Try a 1/2" roller cover that looks pretty smooth from the pic. And if memory serves me right Behr's flat has a sheen. If you want the flattest use a regular ceiling paint.
