I was thinking from measuring the outside diameter of a "stub-out" pipe that brings the water in to under the kitchen sink to a leaking shut-off valve, that it is a "3/4 inch male stub-out, needing a 3/4 inch FIP" - very un-standard. But... looking at charts showing NPT threads and pipe sizes, etc. it looks like a pipe with an exterior diameter of over 3/4 inch (freckle less than 7/8, using a crescent wrench as a caliper), actually is a standard 1/2 inch male threaded stub-out. Lots easier to buy the valve for, including even at the big box hardware stores.

Does this sound right? Being far from hardware stores here means I want to have the correct parts before digging in...

Typically, all branch water lines for things like sinks should be 1/2 pipe size. The main feed from your meter will normally be 3/4 pipe size.
