I was hoping to get an opinion from someone with experience in construction. We have a storm door on the front of our house. The wind caught it a while back and the closing mechanism ripped out a chunk of wood at the top of the frame and cracked the wood at the bottom.

We have had two men come look. One said that he would cut the bad parts and remove them, then cut pieces to fit in the hole, seal, paint and attach the new door closer with longer screws. The second man said that "You cannot just remove the piece and put in a new piece because there won't be anything directly behind to attach to. Ask any contractor and they will tell you that will not work." He did not know (as far as I know) that we had someone come out the day before. He wants to replace the door, which gets into an issue of having to match door colors (which is a custom paint) due to HOA rules. It would be easier if there is a method to repair, but I mostly want it done right.

I have reached out to two other guys who were recommended to me in order to figure out the best (and possible) plan. Unfortunately, one hasn't responded and the other has been impossible to connect with (weeks before responding to me, then when I answer him, he doesn't respond). I know this isn't a large job and they may be busy, but it would be nice to have some communication.

Now, I'm just frustrated. I can't pick one of the original two because I don't know which is correct. I was excited to get this fixed, but now it has turned into an annoyance.

Please help. I'm thinking of calling Lowe's and getting a name of a random person (asking for friend's references isn't working out so well) to see what they say, but am tired of the lack of being able to actually get someone to call me.

Thank you. I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle this. I was trying to get personal recommendations and possibly support a local businessman. However, that isn't working out so well. My husband and I can handle doing many things for ourselves, but sometimes we feel it better to have someone come in to do a job.
