I have a island area that is 5 ft wide by 8ft long and 32 inches tall studded and covered with CDX plywood. I plan on putting stone veneer on it. I have seen guys put the veneer right over the CDX with an adhesive. Does anyone think that's they way to go? Or should it be a modified thinset with some sort of either tar paper or cement board first? My island is in the basement, dry as a bone down there. I'm in NW Ohio and get to have the four seasons, lol winter suks! There is a humidifier in the basement also.

Manufacturers do have online details and specifications for their products. I have done a project that specified mastic over OSB for a retail buildout, but I would never do it at anyone's house. 1/4" hardie backer screwed to the plywood and then thinset the stone.
