Hi,

I'm going to be installing some splitface natural slate wall tile around my gas fireplace, to make it a feature wall. The tiles are 24" x 6". Some people say the best way to install is using mortar/thinset, and then others who swear by PL Premium and Loctite adhesives for ease of use and cleanliness.

I'm wondering what method is best over painted drywall? I feel like mortar would not bond to the painted drywall as well as an adhesive would. I would prefer not to install concrete board if i don't have to.

Below is a picture of the stone being used.

Thanks and look forward to your comments!

You can not apply that over drywall. The application calls for first installing 1/4" hardibacker screwed to the studs (over the drywall if you want), then a polymer modified thinset to adhere it.

The shear (tear) strength of the paper on drywall is not high enough to serve as a backing for an adhered veneer product.
