Hello all,
I recently posted on advice of an inexpensive exterior house painting and was told tk do it myself. I just need help on what steps I need to take to be successful. This is a trade I know nothing about.
1) I assume removal of the old paint is required. Whats better to do, sand or pressure wash?
2) I dont know what kind of wood I have, but its nothing special. Do I need coat(s) of primer?
3) I live in Washington state and rains bad. Is there a certain paint I need, and how many coats?
4)ive seen painters spray on paint. Does rolling work as good?

If there is any more info/advice you have, please share it. Hoping to do it this summer.

What condition is the paint in now?
Only places that may need sanding are where the paints peeling. It gets scraped with a paint scraper, then sanded to feather it out to get rid of the step.
Any bare wood will need priming before painting.
If the old paints not peeling, and the woods in good condition then there's no need to remove the paint, prime, or sand it, it just needs to be cleaned.
A pressure washer works best to clean it.
I'd never suggest a first time DIY try and use a paint sprayer.
Most often a brush is used when painting an ext.
Zinsser 123 as a primer works great.
Using a quality brush like a Purdy brand will hold more paint, drip less, and leave less brush marks.

Keep in mind painting is only about 20% of the job the rest is is the prep. As A first timer I would suggest talking to your friends maybe one has some experience and would be able to help get you started.

What condition is the paint in now?

Many spots are peeling and have exposed wood on the trim. The paint on the body? of the house is good and not peeling.
