We recently remodeled the back room in our 1925 bungalow. The room is in an addition that was built in the last 15 years. It used to be a porch that was converted into a den. We converted into a second bathroom and a laundry room. We put down wood laminate flooring. There is a large drop where the back stoop of the house used to be. The bathroom door opening is directly below the step down. The step is about a foot and a half. We would like to ening where the step should be buitl?add another step between the landing and the floor. How should we approach this since we have to deal with an o

The best thing is to split the landing between the bathroom door and the other door to have an intermediate step (check the International Building Code to see if you need two steps).

This will require re-engineering the joists under the landing. It might be possible to cut the joists as thin as 2x6 quality and sister 2x8 or 2x10 sections (depending on horizontal span) to the affected portions. An additional support column will be needed underneath.

If you succeed in doing it this way, install banisters so guests will realize that there are steps.
