Step Cracks in Field Stone Fireplace - Potential Problem?

858 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Vince86
Hi all,

We had a wood burning field stone fireplace built at our house in 2013. Last weekend, I noticed some step cracking in the mortar which runs down from about a half a foot above the mantle to the top of the fireplace doors. The cracks seem to follow a path around the field stones. I was wondering if these cracks are normal, or if they will get worse and we will need to have the masonry re-pointed?

Thank you for your help.

Sounds like a little settling which is normal, just keep an eye on the cracks, and yes they may have to be pointed down the line.
You may need a professional to look at the cracks before they even go to worse.
