Old (1930 ish) single-pipe steam system .. one of the radiators has a steam vent that refuses to close .. even after replacing it with new Hoffman units (I tried two new ones) .. I know the replacements work because I tried them elsewhere.

I'm sure the vent isn't binding because I can hear it move if I tap the bottom, and I know there's enough clearance when it's threaded in.

What gives? .. just try another type of vent?

Left to its devices .. when all the other units in the system are at temperature .. this one will whistle like a locomotive and prevents the boiler from reaching the cut-out pressure (and makes the room a sauna).

There's 15 other radiators in the house of various sizes and this is the only one I have a problem with.
