Starting Marigolds from seed

I have a bag of seeds from last year. Anyone have any luck starting from seed? I live in South west PA.

Is it ok to plant the seeds without starting them in small pots? How far down should i plant seeds? Is this the right time to do it? I think we've seen our last frost, its supposed to be 85 here in Pgh this weekend
