Question about using a starter shingle roll. Is it in addition to a starter shingle then the first course or is the first course of (3 tab) shingles to go right on the starter roll ? The roof is in the SF Bay Area, rarely gets below freezing.

It replaces a typical starter. So first course right over roll.

#1, No way would I be installing 3 tab shingles unless I was flipping a house.
#2, If I was going to cheap out with 3 tab's I would not spend the extra money on a starter strip.
You'd get the same protection by cutting off the tabs on the 3 tabs, cut the shingle along the notch at the top of the shingle to off set the joints, flip it around so the adhesive is at the bottom..

Thanks Craig.
Joe, I'm only going two to three courses of shingles into the roof to install a drip edge and splice in new plywood deck in one spot (one spot so far, anyway), so I stuck with what's on the rest of the roof. And, I like the way the entire backside of the starter roll sticks down to the extra wide drip edge I'm installing.
