NEC typically requires that NM cable be secured within 6 inches of entering a box. I am adding a box in my attic within 6 inches of another box and there will be NM running between the two boxes. Is it sufficient to clamp both ends to boxes only, our do I have to get a staple in there somewhere?

If it's secured within 6 inches of each box by the other box's clamp/connector, I would think that meets the requirement. It doesn't say anything about staples - just that it be secured.

It is only 6" for single gang non-metallic boxes with no clamps. Everything else is 12".
