Hi,

Renovating a house and have noticed that the stringers on the main staircase have separated quite badly, to the point where I think it is quite dangerous - certainly can see straight through in places.

What options, other than a new staircase, do I have for repair?

Googling shows me a case where you can use threaded bar to pull the two sides together - cannot post the link but it is on the Ann Arbor website. (stair-repair-101)

What options do I have? I think the threaded bar 'hack' would work.

Thanks in advance.

It looks like this kind of stringer with reinforcing pieces of wood missing and since open on one side, easier for the treads to pull away. Maybe original treads were replaced? Trying to pull/push the sides tighter probably would end up opening joints somewhere else or damage the stringers. I would add cleats under the stairs with glue and screws and cover the gaps with small trims. You can miter the ends then sand round for better looking ends.
